Congratulations to Council Chairman of the Squaxin Island Tribe Kris Peters, Capital High School student Joseph McCraney, and Olympia High School students Anova Sattar and Vy Le for being recognized at this year’s Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 113 annual awards dinner.

The May 28, 2025 event drew a strong showing of supporters to recognize outstanding educational administrators and others who have made extraordinary contributions to K-12 education.

The following is information shared during the WASA awards dinner:

WASA Student Leadership Awards
The Student Leadership Award recognizes outstanding student leaders who have created or played a significant leadership role in initiatives or programs that promote access, equity or social justice in their school and community.

Joseph McCraney, Capital High School
Joseph exemplifies leadership and service. As the school mascot and an active member of the Advanced Leadership class, he plays a vital role in planning and participating in student-led events. He was instrumental in launching the school’s Unified Sports program for students with disabilities and is a committed member of the varsity basketball team. Known for stepping up to challenges that others may avoid, Joseph courageously portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a school assembly, despite having no prior acting experience. His positive influence and inspiring personality motivate those around him to take initiative and pursue personal growth.

Anova Sattar, Olympia High School
Those who have worked closely with Anoova over the past three years have observed her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to social justice. She has been a strong advocate for equity, organizing impactful events such as the MLK assembly and the FamOly multicultural celebration. With a 4.0 GPA, a deep commitment to educational reform and her leadership role in the Equity Action Team, Anoova has consistently demonstrated her ability to drive meaningful change. Her efforts align closely with the goals of this award, and she is well-positioned to influence educational policy at the state level.

Vy Le, Olympia High School
Vy Le is an extraordinary student whose talents place her among the top 0.1% of students encountered by educators with decades of experience. She excels academically, is enrolled in six college-level courses, and demonstrates outstanding leadership through her involvement in STAND, DECA, and the Mental Health Club. Vy played a pivotal role in organizing the FamOly Assembly and has been instrumental in advancing inclusive teaching practices through her work on Universal Design for Learning. Her deep commitment to inclusivity, student empowerment, and mental health advocacy distinguishes her as a standout leader. Vy’s dedication and impact make her an exceptional candidate for any opportunity.

WASA Community Leadership Award
The Community Leadership Award is presented to community members or groups to recognize their outstanding contributions to education.

Kris Peters, Council Chairman of the Squaxin Island Tribe
Chairman Peters has been a steadfast partner to the Olympia School District, playing a key role in strengthening the district’s relationship with the Squaxin people. His leadership has guided meaningful collaboration, including the flying of the Squaxin Island Tribe flag at the district office and, soon, at all school sites. His dedication to honoring tribal sovereignty and fostering cultural understanding has enriched both the schools and the broader community. His efforts have laid a lasting foundation of respect, partnership, and shared purpose.
