CSEY Surprise Award Presentation

Congratulations to Susan Nussler, from the OSD Transportation Department, who was named Classified School Employee of the Year.

Nussler learned of the honor during a surprise announcement at a December Transportation Department team meeting, where Superintendent Patrick Murphy shared the news. Colleagues celebrated her dedication and contributions with applause and congratulations.

Nussler is an invaluable member of the Transportation Department. As a substitute bus driver, she steps into any route at a moment’s notice, safely transporting students of all ages, including those with special needs, while building positive relationships and ensuring they feel safe and respected.

In her role as a certified driver trainer, Susan provides classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for new hires, mentoring them through the certification process and helping them develop the skills and confidence to succeed. She continues to support staff even after training, fostering a strong, collaborative culture within the department.

Nussler also created a Positive Behavior Support system for the Transportation Department, encouraging positive interactions among students, staff and families. Her initiative reflects her dedication not only to her role but to the district’s mission of creating safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments.

“Her professionalism, dependability and compassion make Susan an exceptional representative of our district,” said Jeff Gregory, who nominated her. “She consistently goes above and beyond because she genuinely cares about her work and the people she serves.”

Susan will be honored at a school board recognition ceremony on January 8, 2026, with special recognition at 6 p.m. before the regularly scheduled board meeting. The Olympia community is invited to join the celebration at the Knox Administrative Center, 111 Bethel St. N.E., Olympia.

Classified School Employee of the Year is an annual statewide program through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. It begins with local nominations from school districts across Washington, with the opportunity to advance to regional and state recognition.

The annual award recognizes employees who have made a positive difference in their profession. A screening committee of OSD employees reviewed the nominations before selecting the honorees.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction recognizes the regional finalists and announces the state Classified School Employee of the Year at an annual spring award ceremony.
