New Bell Schedule for the 2012-13 School Year
On Monday, June 11, 2012, the Olympia School Board approved a new bell schedule for the Olympia School District in order to help the District close its $2 million budget deficit. The new schedule creates staggered start and end times for our schools so that the District’s Transportation Department can be more efficient in busing students to and from school. The new schedule reduces a number of routes throughout the district, which allows the District to save money on drivers, driver benefits, fuel, and vehicle maintenance. The total budget savings is $160,000 per year. The rest of the District’s draft budget proposes using $1.5 million from operating reserves to fill the majority of the budget gap, along with $330,000 in other reductions. Additional budget details.
This new bell schedule means new school day start and end times for the 2012-13 school year. We understand the new schedules will impact families so we wanted to be sure and provide as much advance notice as possible. Later this summer, in early August, our Transportation Department will have the District’s new bus stop, route and pickup time information available on its web site. An announcement will go out to families when this site is updated with the new information.
